CQ Capras beaten by North Qld Gold Stars in BMD Premiership decider

The minor premiers were beaten in the final minute of the grand final by the North Queensland Gold Stars. Read what coach Amanda Ohl had to say about the result here.

“Gut-wrenching.”

That is how coach Amanda Ohl summed up the CQ Capras’ heartbreaking loss in the BMD Premiership grand final on Saturday

The Capras, who finished as minor premiers after losing just one of their seven round games, were beaten by two points by the North Queensland Gold Stars in the decider.

Ironically, it was CQ product Sarah Field who played a leading hand in the Gold Stars’ last-gasp victory.

The talented five-eighth put up a spiralling bomb which took a cruel bounce allowing teammate Shaniah Power to pounce and score the winning try in the last minute of the game.

The Capras trailed 10-6 at half-time but got back into the contest with centre Emma Paki’s try in the 42nd minute putting them in front for the first time in the game.

They worked tirelessly to maintain their lead but were denied the title by the last-minute play by the Gold Stars.

Ohl struggled to sum up the result.

“Gut-wrenching way to lose a grand final,” she said.

“The girls worked so hard to get themselves back into the game after half-time and get in front. To have it stolen from them in the dying seconds... no words can describe that feeling.

“Of course we are very proud of what we have achieved this year. To go from second last in 2021 to minor premiers is an amazing achievement but right now, everyone involved is hurting.

“I would like to say a huge thank you to all the amazing supporters that got down to cheer and scream for the girls on Saturday.”
