Two people have been taken to hospital following a crash on a major highway southwest of Mackay on Thursday.

Crews were called to a two-vehicle crash on the Peak Downs Highway near the turn off for Millennium Mine, outside of Moranbah, about 2pm.

A spokesman for Queensland Police Service said a ute and semi-trailer were involved in the crash.

The spokesman said the vehicles crashed off the road and one lane of the highway had been closed to traffic.

The vehicles left the road and wound up heavily damaged in surrounding bushland. The ute’s tray was crushed and it’s front sustained significant damage.

A spokeswoman for Queensland Ambulance Service said paramedics treated two people, but they were both in stable conditions.

She said a man in his 50s was being treated for neck pain and cuts and abrasions and the other person was being treated for cuts and abrasions.

Both were transported to Moranbah Hospital.
