More than 30 roads across the Mackay, Isaac and Whitsunday region remain flooded, with some stretches still closed to traffic this morning.

It comes as the Bureau of Meteorology records rainfall totals of more than 120mm in the 24 hours since 9am Thursday.

There was 128mm recorded at the Gooseponds in North Mackay and 112mm in Andergrove in the Mackay region and in the Burdekin the highest falls recorded in the 24 hours since 9am Thursday were 126mm at Maryvale Creek.

Rainfall in the Whitsundays and in the Isaac region has lightened.

The rain caused havoc in Nebo on Thursday morning as a man was forced to seek refuge on the bonnet of his Ford four-wheel-drive.

Water had inundated the 48 year old’s vehicle at the causeway near the junction of Oxfords Downs Sarina Rd and Waitara Rd, about 70 minutes’ drive west of Mackay.

The water was running with force over the causeway and the driver made it less than half-way across the causeway before being stopped.

Firefighters, paramedics and the SES all came to his aid, arriving shortly after 5.30am, with two Swift Water Rescue technicians retrieving the man about 45 minutes later.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said he was uninjured and did not require transport to hospital.

The wet weather comes as the BOM warns of a potential new cyclone forming in the Coral Sea.

If it does form, it will become Queensland’s third cyclone in as many months.
