Students at a Mackay high school were placed on lockdown after an argument got out of hand.

Police were called about a disturbance at the Pioneer State High School over the lunch break, which ended up in having to lock students down in their classrooms.

Senior Sergeant Mitch Benson said an argument between parents and students had escalated, leading officers to follow the standard procedure of putting all students in lockdown.

Sen Sgt Benson said the argument had not involved any physical violence and no weapons were found.

He said residents and parents could be assured that there was “no issue for public safety” and that the lockdown had only been a precaution.

A Queensland Department of Education spokeswoman said it was a ‘precautionary’ lockdown, explaining that principals determine when they are needed.

“Lockdowns are utilised to ensure safety when a threat is identified and requires staff and students to shelter in place,” she said.

“Pioneer State High School entered a precautionary lockdown today at 11:30am in response to a student behaviour incident.

“The Queensland Police Service were contacted and attended the school to assist staff and monitor the situation.

“QPS gave the all-clear at approximately 12:10pm for school to proceed as usual.”

The spokeswoman said staff, students and members of the school community were safe during this time.

“Parents and carers have been informed and support is available at the school for anyone who requires it,” she said.
