This year is shaping up to be one of transformations with another of Mackay’s major sporting clubs lodging expansion plans.
Just weeks after Mackay Cricket Association submitted a development application for a new deck and a bigger gaming room at Harrup Park Country Club, Magpies Sporting Club has filed its own expansion plans.
If Mackay Regional Council approves the plans, the club on the corner of Glenella Rd and Sweeney Crt in Glenella will almost double its footprint.
The renovation over three stages would increase the gross floor area by a whopping 2229sq m, taking the club’s GFA from 2386sq m to 4615sq m.
Stage 1 will include a new bar and amenities, a new cold room and freezer extension to the Sports Bar, changes to the car park and drop-off areas to include a new porte cochere, and new administration offices.
Stage 2 includes a Sports Bar extension and new deck, dedicated outdoor smoking area, accessible ramp, and landscaping.
And Stage 3 includes enlarging the kid’s room, installing stairs to the Level 1 balcony, building a new covered deck, demolishing a storage shed, and extending the main entrance, cafe and lounge.
Documents state the number of car park spaces by the end of Stage 3 will drop from 358 to 300 but this was still an excess of 199 parking spaces considering the council’s planning scheme had changed from one car park required per 15sq m to one per 50sq m.
