Taco-lovers will be pleased to hear Guzman y Gomez has been green-lit for its first Mackay drive through.

The franchise proposed in the Mount Pleasant Centre car park was approved by Mackay Regional Council on February 2.

Located metres from the Bruce Highway and a stone’s throw from the existing KFC, the Mackay GYG store will be where founder and CEO Steven Marks said it should be “so easy to access”.

Development documents state the new franchise will be open 24/7 with a dual lane drive-through containing 14 cars at any one time.

“The proposal is considered to be in the public interest as it will deliver a number of public, social and economic benefits,” MRC documents state.

It adds the GYG store, which will include both internal and alfresco dining, will create jobs during the construction phase and also once operational.

The Mackay store will be just the fourth GYG north of Rockhampton, following the rollout of three franchises in Townsville.

Rockhampton is in line for its second, with plans for a drive-through store on the city’s south side being considered by council.

The Mexican-themed giant, which got its start in Newton in 2006, has also submitted plans to build a $1 million store in Ipswich just days after it received approval for Mackay.
