A 22 year old who almost died in a horrific workplace explosion has proven his incredible ‘strength’ by returning home after 25 days in hospital.

Breyton Paul suffered critical injuries to his head when a 44 gallon drum he was de-rimming at Ace Mechanical exploded on October 10.

He was flown to Royal Brisbane Hospital where he remained under intensive care for almost three weeks.

Mum Maree Paul, posting to Facebook on Saturday, said he had “shown strength (she) never thought existed”.

“To say I’m proud of my son is a massive understatement,” Mrs Paul posted.

“One month on from his incident, he is back home healing where he’s most comfortable.

“Eighteen days in ICU, three surgeries and a total of 25 days in Royal Brisbane Hospital.

“He still has a long road ahead but I have no doubt he’ll continue kicking goals.

“Massive thanks to everyone for the support you’ve shown our family in this challenging time.”

Aunty Teegan Paul stated Breyton was released from ICU and moved to the Maxillo-Facial Unit on Friday, October 29 after a “big surgery”.

“The surgeons and doctors are very happy with how the procedure went,” Teegan updated on the GoFundMe page which has raised more than $36,000 from 314 donations,” she said.

Pioneer Valley businesses have also fundraised for the Paul family including West Leagues Club, Mirani Hotel, Kookaburra Store, Snak Attack, and Elegance Beauty and Detox Centre.

“Locals support locals,” Elegance Beauty posted on Facebook.

“Money doesn’t change things but it might help ease the burden a little … thinking of you at this trying time.”

The explosion, which rocked the wider Mackay region community, has renewed calls for a new ambulance station to be stationed in the valley, which the Queensland Ambulance Service previously indicated will not happen in the near future.
