A young man who suffered critical head injuries while de-rimming a drum at work is in intensive care awaiting multiple surgeries.

Breyton Paul, 22, was working on a 44 gallon drum to use for scrap at the Ace Mechnical workshop in Marian about 2.17pm on Monday when it exploded.

He was flown to a Brisbane hospital where he remains in a trauma intensive care unit, his aunty Teegan Paul wrote in a GoFundMe fundraiser.

“For those who don’t know Breyton, he is 22 son to be 23, with his whole life ahead of him,” Ms Paul wrote.

“Breyton is fun, kind, caring and extremely cheeky with a heart of gold.

“He loves sports, fishing, hanging with his wonderful family and going out with mates on the weekends.”

Mr Paul worked at Ace Mechanical alongside his father, Troy, who owns the business.

Teegan Paul said while Breyton’s mother, Maree, and younger sister, Keeleigh, had “raced” to Brisbane to be by his side, Troy had to return to Marian to keep the workshop afloat to help finance medical costs, accommodation and flights to visit his son, and daily living expenses.

“It is a long road to recovery with many surgeries to be had, I ask if anyone can dig deep in their pockets to donate big or small as every little bit will help,” Ms Paul said.

She said many in Mackay and throughout the Pioneer Valley knew Breyton who is involved with the Country United soccer club.

The family aims to raise $25,000 and has secured more than $24,000 so far from 231 donations.

Workplace Health and Safety Queensland confirmed they were investigating the incident with investigators at the site on Monday afternoon.
