From pulling a knife on a group of campers at Teewah, to kicking a Gympie pub worker for denying a drunk woman service, these are some of the men and women who have fronted the Gympie court in the past six months after resorting to violence.

Jade Hoon

A Gympie woman, who claimed a break-in and subsequent assault was the product of her good intentions will be sentenced in the Gympie court next month after pleading guilty to assault occasioning bodily harm.

Jade Elizabeth Hoon, 42, pleaded guilty in Gympie Magistrates Court on April 4, 2022, to three charges including breaking in, assault occasioning bodily harm (domestic violence offence), and breaching a probation order.

The court heard Hoon broke into a woman’s unit while she was sleeping, before she appeared in her bedroom and screamed at her to get out of bed.

Hoon then grabbed a metal tube and hit the bed with it before she struck the woman on the upper thigh.

The woman was ushered to the couch, where Hoon threatened to stab her with a pair of scissors.

The woman only managed to escape when Hoon mistook a neighbour walking up the hallway for police, and sent the woman outside to tell them she was not there.

The matter was adjourned to “sort out factual basis for sentence”.

Hoon was remanded in custody, and will return to Gympie Magistrates Court for a hearing on May 23, 2022.

Liam Sing

A 24-year-old Gympie man who robbed the local McDonald’s left a police officer with injuries so bad he struggled to breathe.

Liam Brighton Sing pleaded guilty in Gympie District Court on March 21, 2022, to armed robbery and grievous bodily harm.

The court heard the officer tracked Sing down after he robbed the Gympie McDonald’s and fled with $2000 in cash.

Sing, who insisted he had done nothing wrong despite being recognised by restaurant staff, was placed under arrest but fought back.

As the officer was trying to put him in his car, Sing pushed back and a scuffle broke out.

The officer was punched “once or twice in the mouth” while Sing yelled “f---- this, let me go, you C---”.

He then repeatedly punched the officer in the face before fleeing.

The officer was left with a broken nose, cut lip, bruised left hip, bruised right shin, swelling, and a concussion. He needed surgery on his nose to fix a “significant reduction” in his ability to breathe.

Judge Glen Cash sentenced Sing to five-and-a-half years jail.

Sing will be eligible for parole in February 2023 having already served one year and seven months behind bars in pre-sentence custody.

Reginald Marshall

Gympie man Reginald Marshall was charged with common assault after he became irate at the sight of a man accused of sending nude photos to a woman Marshall knew.

He pleaded guilty to the lone charge in Gympie Magistrates Court on March 15, 2021.

The court heard the accused photo sender, whose surname was ironically “Dick”, was approached by Marshall in Gympie’s Nelson Reserve at 5.30pm on August 9, 2021.

Marshall grabbed Mr Dick by the collar and pushed him, but defence lawyer Chris Anderson later clarified there was no skin on skin contact or strangulation during the event.

Mr Dick was taken to Gympie Hospital, but was not significantly injured, the court heard.

The court heard Marshall had a history of violence, including an instance in June 2021 when police were called to the Gympie Hospital Emergency Department after he challenged another man to fight.

Magistrate Kurt Fowler sentenced Marshall to four months in jail with an immediate parole release.

Damien Shorter

A 41-year-old Bollier dad outstayed his welcome at his neighbour’s property when a physical fight broke out, and he later attempted to headbutt a police officer.

Damien Shorter pleaded guilty in Gympie Magistrates Court on March 15, 2022, to four charges, including unlawfully remaining in a yard, public nuisance, obstructing a police officer and assaulting a police officer.

The court heard police were called to Shorter’s neighbour’s house after a fight broke out during a night of drinking, though no one was seriously injured.

Shorter was found in an angry state and “straddling a barbed wire fence” while trying to escape before police arrived, and was unable to be calmed down as police tried to remove him from the property.

Shorter was arrested and taken to the Gympie watch house.

When they arrived, Shorter lashed out again and attempted to headbutt an officer, but did not physically connect.

Magistrate Kurt Fowler sentenced Shorter to two months behind bars, suspended for 15 months.

Joel Murray

A 31-year-old Mackay miner and father dragged a teen to the ground after he and another man made “pests” of themselves at a Teewah Beach campsite.

Eton man Joel Murray pleaded guilty in Maroochydore District Court on April 1, 2022, to two charges of common assault and one of going armed to cause fear.

The court heard Murray, who was drunk at the time, and his co accused joined a group of teens camping at Teewah Beach on September 23, 2020, and were asked to leave after some inappropriate behaviour.

Both men were asked to leave, which led to a fight.

Murray then dragged one of the teenager’s to the ground before he grabbed a knife from his car and pointed it at the other teens.

The court heard the men then took off in the car, but were caught by police north of the campsite.

The knife, and Murray’s co-accused’s wallet, were found in the car.

Murray was sentenced to four months’ jail, suspended for six months, while his co-accused is scheduled to appear in Gympie District Court on April 22, 2022.

Anthony Barkle

A Sunshine Coast hairdresser was banned from a Gympie pub after a violent outburst at a staff member in July 2021.

Anthony Robert Terrence Barkle pleaded guilty in Maroochydore Magistrates Court to assault and failing to leave a licenced premises in October 2021.

The court heard Barkle and his mother were drinking at the Phoenix Hotel on Red Hill Rd, Gympie, when Barkle’s mother was cut off.

Barkle screamed profanities at the assistant manager who had cut his mother off, the court heard.

When the same manager saw Barkle’s mother sipping another beer, Barkle was cut off as well.

This resulted in Barkle throwing a glass of water over the manager’s face and shirt.

The court heard Barkle’s mother then got between the two men, trying to get her son to leave, while he continued to scream and yell at the manager.

He was asked to leave several times, before he began kicking the manager in the stomach and legs.

Barkle was ordered to pay $200 compensation to the assistant manager and will also take part in a Drug and Alcohol Assessment Referral course

He was banned from the Phoenix Hotel.

Donna Palmer

A former Gympie teacher aide fronted court after she put her hand around her daughter’s throat.

Donna Cheree Palmer, 51, pleaded guilty in Gympie District Court to common assault and assault occasioning bodily harm.

The court heard the incident began when Palmer visited her daughter’s Monkland home to collect her 17-month-old granddaughter.

But sometime during the visit, a fight broke out which resulted in Palmer placing her hand around her daughter’s throat, though she did not choke her.

Palmer’s daughter got out of her mother’s grip and tried to stop her from leaving, but Palmer put her daughter into a headlock.

A few days later, Palmer handed herself in to Gympie police, where she was charged and released on bail.

She lost her blue card as a result, and was suspended from work, the court heard.

Palmer was ordered to complete 80 hours community service over 12 months.

No conviction was recorded.
