A dog owner living in a small town on the Cooloola Coast received a threatening letter via his “best bud”, an ageing escape artist who suffers from stomach tumours.

A Cooloola Cove dog owner has detailed the moment his elderly pet returned home from an “adventure” with a threatening note tied to his neck.

Chris Morris described his beloved 14-year-old dog Baghdad as an “escape artist”, but was shocked to discover his “best bud” had come home with a menacing message from a stranger one day.

“Please take your dog to vet. I know where you live,” the note said.

An outraged and upset Mr Morris took to Facebook on April 4 to address the message with hopes the mystery writer would see it.

He said he understood where the mystery writer was coming from, as the tumours on his dog appeared “quite confronting”.

“I appreciate that you are concerned for his well being … he has non malignant tumours on his belly and we have taken him in to the vets multiple times and have him on medication to manage the problem and to keep him comfortable,” he wrote.

Baghdad’s organs would not survive surgery due to his age, he said.

“Perhaps next time you come across him, instead of tying things to him just give him a pat and a treat if you would like,” Mr Morris said.

“He is an escape artist but is happy and only does a small circuit when he does get out.

“We are a small community, please don’t jump straight to threatening when you don’t have all the facts. But if you would like to hold that line of approach, the gate’s always open.”

The note prompted dozens of online responses from other dog owners, some of which showed their support for Mr Morris by posting photos of their own dogs in the comments.

“Fifteen is a great age for any dog, so I’m sure he’s much loved,” Caz Bullen wrote.

Pam Smith posted a photo of her dog, Jack, who she said was “very loved and very spoiled” at 18 years old.

“I can’t understand why the person that wrote that note didn’t just go and talk to you seeing as they wrote ‘know where you live’ in a threatening manner,” she said.

The Gympie Times reached out to Mr Morris, but he declined to comment further than what he had posted on Facebook.
