A Glenwood garbage collector who discovered the body of Tiaro man Pedro Wojciechowski after a tragic, late night bike crash at Talegalla Weir has been rewarded by his local community for the heroic action he took.

“Ned” (last name withheld) came across the horrific scene while doing his morning rounds on Friday, January 27, 2023, on Talegalla Rd near Talegalla Weir, 30km south of Maryborough.

He reportedly “respectfully” covered the body and stood guard until the authorities arrived, including shielding the young occupants of the passing school bus from seeing the devastating scene.

Robyn Gray, a Bauple woman and friend of Pedro, organised a GoFundMe page last Sunday, called “Give the garbo that found Pedro a day off”.

“This act of compassion, respect and pure bravery is commendable beyond any words we can offer him,” she said.

Robyn spoke with Ted during his rounds last Friday, and said had been suffering from “past and present PTSD” after witnessing the tragedy, which was “horrendously” similar to the death of his brother, Peter, in a motor accident 12 years ago.

“As he stood Pedro’s final guard, the school bus went past. This bus not only held our precious children, but Pedro’s own granddaughter, all of whom he saved from seeing a sight that would forever change their lives, and send a ripple effect out that could never be reversed, taken back or healed,” Robyn said.

“Hours later, he finished his job like a bloody trooper.”

The GoFundMe page was created to help raise funds so that Ned could have a day off without having to worry about the financial burden.

On Friday morning, Ned received the donation of $514.15 from the fundraiser.

Mr Wojciechowski’s funeral will be held at 1:30pm Friday, February 10, 2023, in Maryborough Life Church, with the wake from 3pm, at The Hideaway Hotel Tiaro.
