A champion Gympie-based boxer is back home with his family after he was stabbed in his front garden.

Danny Hawkins, 45, was building a cubby house for his daughter at his Parsons Rd home when he was allegedly ambushed by a group of men.

He was flown to Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital where he received treatment and the incident is now before the courts.

Speaking exclusively with the Gympie Times, Danny’s wife, Alicia, shared how the family was feeling after the event that shocked the community.

“We are so grateful to everyone for all they have done to support our family during this difficult time,” she said

“Of all the positive support we have received, unfortunately there has been the minority that have allowed themselves to jump to conclusions and make assumptions and gossip.

“We just ask those people to please be mindful particularly if they don’t have the facts and allow the course of justice to speak for itself.”

Due to the nature of Danny’s career, Alicia said it was “very lucky” he was so healthy and able to make a quick recovery.

“Danny is doing well, eager to complete our daughter’s treehouse,” she said.

“Although Danny will be unlikely to fight again we will still be very much involved with the Fred Brophy boxing troupe who have become like a second family to us and who are actually coming to Gympie for the first time ever this Friday and Saturday night.

“It will be frustrating for Danny to be there in his hometown and not be able to fight, but we are just grateful that he is still with us.”

The couple’s important work with their not-for-profit boxing gym Savage Boxing Fitness Centre will remain unchanged, Alicia confirmed.

“We are still very proud to live in Gympie and serve the community … we won’t be going anywhere anytime soon,” she said.
