The wife of a well-known Gympie boxing star, who was stabbed in a terrifying ambush on Saturday (September 18), has shared how her family is coping.

Alicia Hawkins said in a post on Facebook the family had been “overwhelmed” with love and support since her 45-year-old husband and Gympie gym owner Danny had been flown to Brisbane with serious injuries.

“It has been quite a whirlwind and we are both still processing and trying to protect our children,” she wrote.

“We know that you all want to hear updates or hear about what happened but we would appreciate if u (sic) could understand that it is exhausting for us to retell to every person when we are just trying to comprehend it ourselves.

“At this time we just want Danny home with us and to advise that he is getting stronger daily.

“It will take a lot more than that to break this family.”

It comes after the Gympie Times spoke exclusively with neighbour Tom Colley who described the ‘mind-blowing’ moment he rushed to the aid of his next-door neighbour after he was allegedly ambushed by a group of four men with weapons.

Mr Colley said he heard the shouting from inside his house about 4:30pm on September 18 and came out to see what the commotion was about.

“I raced out here and there was a bloke with a couple of samurai sword looking things and another bloke with a bowing knife,” Mr Colley said.

“I saw the finish of the fight, a couple of them took off and then one or two of them were still going.”

What happened next is a blur for Mr Colley but he remembers running over to help Mr Hawkins.

“From what I can understand it started at the gate and they pushed the gates open and when I went over there Danny was laying on the concrete with blood pissing out everywhere,” he said.

“I raced over there and Danny had been stabbed five times and one of them must’ve been in the lungs because it was a gurgly sort of thing.

“I put my hand over it to stop the blood from coming out of it.”

Mr Colley said he saw five men run back to their white four-wheel drive which was parked on the other side of the road.

“Pretty cowardly sort of thing, he had just his fists (to defend himself),” he said.

“He had cuts all up his arms from defending himself.

“It was pretty horrific for here, this is one of the best neighbourhoods I’ve had.”

Mr Hawkins was flown to Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital with “penetrating wounds” to his chest and stomach area.

Mr Hawkins is a champion professional boxer and coach at Savage Boxing and Fitness Centre in Gympie.

He received the WBF World Masters Australian Title in 2019, which at the time he said was the proudest moment of his career.

Police have now charged four Gympie men as a result of the incident, with 22-year-old facing allegations of committing acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm, possessing dangerous drugs and possessing utensils.

Three other Gympie men aged 19, 23 and 35 were also charged with acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm.

They were all refused police bail when they appeared in Gympie Magistrates Court on September 20.

Mr Colley said one of Mr Hawkins’ friends also suffered minor injuries while trying to help.

Police stayed at the scene until the early hours of the morning and Mr Hawkins’ wife and children stayed at his house for the remainder of the night.

“Police kept coming over every half an hour so none of us got any sleep,” he said.

“I’ve never even heard an argument in this street and I know most of the neighbours and everyone gets along well so it was just a bit mind-blowing, I’m still a bit shaken.”
