Gympie community rallies behind Rob Murray with GoFundMe fundraiser

As a well-known Gympie coach battles the big ‘L’, the community has come together and is being asked to show its incredible spirit and compassion in supporting he and his family.

The community is rallying behind a well-known and loved Gympie rugby league coach, after he was diagnosed with three different strands of the big “L”.

Rob Murray has been a devoted coach for the youth of the Gympie Junior Rugby League for 24 years and before that he served in the air force.

In an effort to fight what he calls his “ninjas”, Rob commenced his 25-week chemotherapy treatment on September 24.

This means he will spend time away from most of his family, friends and pets for nearly six months.

A friend of Rob’s, Carina Baker, has set up a GoFundMe fundraiser to assist the Murray family through this difficult time.

“Those that know Rob, know he is a man of honour and respect,” Ms Baker said.

“It’s time for Rob’s continuous giving to others to come back around again.”

The money raised will be donated straight to Rob and Merrilea Murray and will go towards travel expenses and allow Rob’s wife Merrilea to support him through his treatment.

“(It will) hopefully help ease some stress for the next 25 weeks while Rob focuses on fighting his ‘ninjas’,” Ms Baker said.

“Rob has had his amazing wife Merrilea by his side every step of the way.”

Rob’s tireless efforts with the Gympie Devils were recognised when he was awarded a life membership at the club back in 2016.

“After serving in the air force he has used his skills and lessons learnt with the youth at the Gympie Junior Rugby League … coaching, inspiring and showing the way for kids of all ages,” Ms Baker said.
