Shane Goorden in court after abusing Gladstone Hospital staff

A disability pensioner who yelled at hospital staff said he did not care if he was fined for his abhorrent behaviour because it would come from other people’s taxes, a court has heard.

A man who abused staff at a Central Queensland hospital, calling them “black c--ts and curry munchers”, has faced court.

Shane Anthony Goorden, 55, pleaded guilty in Gladstone Magistrates Court on March 19 to public nuisance and smoking in an enclosed place.

The court heard that on February 27, Goorden was detained under an emergency examination authority and taken to Gladstone Hospital.

It was told that while Goorden was inside the hospital, he started smoking a cigarette.

He also abused staff and along with the derogatory comments he made, he yelled out multiple times: “Get me my f---ing dinner.”

Police prosecutor Kelvin Boyd said Goorden yelled at one of the doctors: “No you curry munchers, f--- off. Go back to your own country.”

Mr Boyd said Goorden showed no remorse for his behaviour, saying he would just get a fine which he would pay off at $10 per week out of his disability pension, which didn’t bother him because it came from other people’s taxes.

The court heard that Goorden had a two-page criminal history and he had previously been sentenced to terms of imprisonment for various offences including ones of violence.

A self-represented Goorden told Magistrate Mary Buchanan that he knew he was “in the wrong” with what he did at the hospital and he’d been drinking most of that day.

“Yeah, so I just wasn’t in the right frame of mind,” he said.

“And I’m sorry for what I said and done.”

Ms Buchanan said it was hard enough attracting specialists to the regions without Goorden referring to them the way he had.

She fined him $600 and a conviction was recorded.
