A man who allegedly sucker-punched a Gladstone police officer while she stood guard at a Gladstone quarantine facility applied for bail on December 13.

Joseph Peter Stott-Hudson, 20, appeared via video-link in Gladstone Magistrates Court where he applied for bail on three charges including serious assault of a police officer.

Police prosecutor Senior Sergeant Tania Griffiths told the court that on December 13, around 12.18am, a police officer was standing in the driveway of a quarantine hotel in Goondoon Street.

“As the victim stood there the defendant allegedly snuck along a garden bed, using it to conceal himself, before launching a surprise attack on her from the side.

“The defendant allegedly ran from the garden bed with his right fist raised, aiming directly at the victim and has punched her twice to the right side of her face with a closed fist.

“This caused the victim to fall backwards down the driveway onto the concrete and hit the back of her head, causing instant pain to her head and body.”

Ms Griffiths told Acting Magistrate Ron Muirhead that Stott-Hudson was not to be released on bail under any circumstances.

“Given his lengthy criminal history and complete disregard for police orders he has been placed on in the past, the prosecution is submitting his bail be emphatically denied,” Ms Griffiths said.

“If he was to be released on bail today, the prosecution believes that the risk to the community and police officers serving the Gladstone community is too great.”

Stott-Hudson’s lawyer Rio Ramos said her client would abstain from offending if he was granted bail and had shown remorse for his offending.

“He understands the gravity of his offending and has communicated to me he would like to apologise to the officer he assaulted if given the chance,” Ms Ramos said.

Acting Magistrate Ron Muirhead said Stott-Hudson’s offending was reprehensible and he could not possibly grant him bail given the charge’s severity.

Stott-Hudson was denied bail with his matters to be heard in early 2022.
