A Gladstone man threatened to kill a doctor who was attempting to treat him after being told he would have to wait to make a phone call.

Brandon Lee Jackson, 27, pleaded guilty to three charges including two common assaults and conduct causing public nuisance (hospital).

Police prosecutor Senior Sergeant Merrilyn Hoskins told the court Jackson was taken to hospital for a mental health assessment around 5.15pm on May 22, 2021.

He was abusive towards staff and continually used foul language, namely the word ‘f---’ at the top of his voice.

Once arriving at hospital and being administered a highly effective sedative, Jackson started screaming at his treating doctor, saying he was an ex-drug addict and the medication would have no effect.

Jackson made a number of unreasonable demands during his outburst, including to be given a cigarette and a phone call.

A court heard Jackson’s treating doctor tried his best to treat his patient, which culminated in Jackson threatening “give me a f---ing phone call or I am going to f---ing kill you”.

Suddenly, Jackson jumped out of his hospital bed and began running full speed in the direction of the exit.

A nurse was standing in Jackson’s path studying Jackson’s chart, unaware he was running right for her.

Fortunately, Jackson was tackled by five police and security guards before he could reach the nurse.

The nurse had to take evasive action to narrowly avoid being knocked over by Jackson and was left shaken.

Jackson was administered several additional rounds of various sedatives and eventually was in a calm enough state to be left in the hospital’s custody.

Ms Hoskins said Jackson had the benefit of fines, probation orders and suspended sentences.

“He has breached the probation orders and in relation to suspended sentences, has had the operational period extended,” she said.

“The victims of the common assaults were health care professionals, however, there was no actual violence, and the principle that imprisonment is of last resort is still enlivened.”

Jackson’s lawyer Jun Pepito said if his client was to receive a period of jail time, it should be wholly suspended and it would be up to him to sort his life out.

Magistrate Bevan Manthey said Jackson had been given too many chances by the Queensland courts system and actual jail time was his only option.

Jackson was convicted and sentenced to 12 months imprisonment with a parole release date set at February 6, 2022. Convictions were recorded.
