Man allegedly caught drink driving, speeding in Gold Coast hinterland

Three people appeared before Gladstone Magistrates Court on Monday to face driving offences.

Luke Geoffrey Panneman, 42

Four heavy beers in as many hours was enough for Luke Geoffrey Panneman to be convicted of drink driving, a court heard.

Panneman, 42, pleaded guilty to the charge before Acting Magistrate Ron Muirhead.

Police prosecutor Senior Sergeant Tania Griffiths told the court that on December 3, around 9.35pm, police intercepted a white Mitsubishi Pajero on the Dawson Highway, Calliope.

Panneman submitted to a roadside breath test which returned a positive result and he was detained for further testing.

When questioned, Panneman made admissions to drinking four VBs since 5.45pm that afternoon.

Panneman’s second breath test returned a blood-alcohol reading of .076 and he was issued a notice to appear in Gladstone Magistrates Court.

Acting Magistrate Muirhead convicted and fined Panneman $500 and suspended him from driving for two months. A conviction was recorded.

Nathan Reginald Wieland, 43

A Gladstone region supermarket manager smoked a dangerous drug then hit the road on his Harley Davidson motorcycle, a court heard.

Nathan Reginald Wieland, 43, pleaded guilty to drug driving.

Police prosecutor Senior Sergeant Tania Griffiths told the court that on October 9, around 12pm, police intercepted a black Harley Davidson on Philip Street, Gladstone.

Wieland submitted to a roadside drug test which returned a positive indication for a relevant drug.

Having been detained for further testing, Wieland made admissions to using illicit drugs and was unable to provide an emergency reason for driving.

After Wieland’s second test returned a positive reading, he was issued a notice to appear in Gladstone Magistrates Court.

Laboratory checks on Wieland’s saliva revealed marijuana was the drug in his system at the time of his interception.

When asked if he had anything to say regarding his offending, Wieland said a family tragedy made him turn to marijuana.

“The day my son died, I stopped drinking and started smoking marijuana,” Wieland said.

“It was a stupid thing to do, you know, I am a supermarket manager and it's not a good look.”

Wieland was convicted and fined $400 and suspended from driving for one month.

Nathan John Barker, 30

A man denied a bag which contained dangerous drugs found on the back seat of his car by police was his, despite it being named.

Nathan John Barker, 30, pleaded guilty to unlicensed driving and possession of dangerous drugs before Acting Magistrate Ron Muirhead.

Police prosecutor Senior Sergeant Tania Griffiths told the court that on November 19, around 11.25am, police intercepted a white Holden Rodeo on Dougall Street, Bororen.

Police checks on Barker’s licence found he was SPER suspended as of September 19, 2021.

Barker told police he was unaware he was SPER suspended and did not offer an emergency reason for driving.

A search of Barker’s car by police located a bag on the back seat which Barker said was not his, despite an airport bag tag displaying his name being attached.

Police observed a homemade water pipe in a plastic bag along with a plastic container which had 0.2 grams of marijuana in it.

When questioned in relation to the water pipe, Barker said it was his, he forgot it was in his bag and he had used it with his friends two days prior.

When asked about the marijuana, Barker said it was his and he smoked the rest of the drug two days prior.

Barker was apologetic and compliant with police before the items were seized and a notice to appear in Gladstone Magistrates Court was issued.

Barker was convicted and fined $600 and suspended from driving for one month. Convictions were recorded.
