Excitement has been building at the Hervey Bay Golf Club as two of the club’s best prepare to compete at the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Golf Championships in Darwin.

Father-son duo Elgar, 74, and Robin Harrison, 36, say the event presents a fantastic opportunity to represent both their “culture and the Fraser Coast region”.

Elgar has been a trailblazer throughout his sporting career, with he and his brother Brian Harrison being the first aboriginal members of the Murgon Golf Club, in the South Burnett.

It cannot be forgotten that it is a community effort that is helping the duo get to Darwin. The Hervey Bay RSL has granted them $2000 in funding to ensure their dreams can become a reality.

Elgar is confident his experience, “great skill and low handicap” will help him get the victory in the Over 60’s competition. Robin, with a handicap of 1, is one of the favourites for the A Grade competition and according to club members has improved with every practice as the competition drawn closer.

The chance to share the experience with his son is “special” to Elgar and means more than any victory or hole-in-one.

Play begins in Darwin on September 18, and goes until December 22.
