The deadly Bruce Highway intersection that claimed the lives of three men in 2024 is set to receive a multimillion-dollar upgrade.
The pledge was made prior to the state election and on Thursday, January 30, Premier David Crisafulli and Transport and Main Roads Minister Brent Mickelberg made the announcement near the crash scene.
Mr Crisafulli labelled the highway a “national disgrace” and a “goat track” when vowing to make it safer for Queenslanders.
Truck drivers Daniel Stuart and Tim Hickey along with Maryborough’s Sidney Marstella died in the crash at the Walker Street intersection with the Bruce Highway at Maryborough on March 22, 2024.
The deaths sparked hundreds of demands for a major funding boost to fix the Bruce Highway, particularly north of Gympie, to stop the carnage and devastation.
Prior to the election, the LNP pledged $20 million towards upgrading the intersection.
At the time it was announced that a roundabout was intended, but on Thursday Mr Mickelberg said no plans had been finalised.
He said ramps and other options would also be considered and planning and design work was already underway.
“That will consider community feedback, but also what is the best outcome to ensure that the Bruce Highway is safe and traffic keeps moving,” Mr Mickelberg said.
“That’ll be informed by the planning process and the detailed design process.
“We’ll go to them with different designs to ensure that whatever we’re going to deliver here meets community expectation.”
There was no official timeline for the project, which Mr Crisafulli said would be funded as part of the wider plan to upgrade the Bruce Highway, following the federal government unveiling a $7.2 billion funding package.
Maryborough MP John Barounis was also at the announcement, having previously stated that the intersection was one local people avoided because it was so dangerous.
