BRISBANE’s city skyline will light up tonight in the “biggest and best” fireworks display ever staged at the Ekka.
The Ekka has been shut down this year – only the third time in it’s 144-year history – and while fans won’t be able to sit around the main arena for the traditional Ekkanites fireworks and entertainment show, they will be able to see the light show in the sky.

This year there is a one-off five-minute spectacular with fireworks set off from the ground of the main arena and from light towers and rooftops.
The fireworks are also bigger and will go higher than ever before. Some will burst up to 290m in the air, well above the previous record of 70m and some will be eight times larger than those last year.
The fire show will be able to be seen from anywhere there is a clear view of the city skyline.
It will also be televised on Channel 7 News from 6pm.
Max Brunner of Skylighter Fireworks, who says COVID-19 has shut down 99 per cent of the fireworks industry has donated the Ekka firework display.
“This is a goodwill gesture,” he says. “My team and I wanted to give back to the RNA which has supported us.”
And he says he also wants to encourage people not to give up hope.
“For the people of Brisbane and southeast Queensland this is a little sense of normality.
“Ekka is an amazing institution in Queensland and this is symbolising that there are brighter days ahead, there is light at the end of the tunnel – in our case that’s pyrotechnic light.”
