THE Ekka might not be going ahead in 2020, but organisers have found a way to ensure Queenslanders can still watch the beloved fireworks display.

In welcome news for Ekka devotees, Channel 7 will broadcast a special fireworks show live from the RNA Showgrounds on Thursday night so fans across Queensland can tune in from home.

The event is a partnership between 7NEWS, the RNA and Skylighter FireworX in a bid to keep the spirit of the Ekka alive amid the global coronavirus pandemic.

For only the third time in its 144-year history, the Ekka was cancelled in April in the interest of public health.

“With the event impacted for only the third time in its history because of the coronavirus pandemic, we’re proud to broadcast this spectacular fireworks display to homes across the state,” 7 NEWS anchor Sharyn Ghidella said.

“I know this will be welcome news to all of us who share special connections with the EKKA, especially those who are separated from family and friends due to ongoing restrictions.”

Ghidella and co-anchor Max Futcher will broadcast Thursday’s Channel 7 News bulletin from the RNA Showgrounds before the live fireworks display.

“We encourage everyone to tune in from the comfort of your homes. This is a thank you to the people of Queensland, many who are doing it incredibly tough at this time,” Futcher added.

It follows news that showbags have been available online, while Showbag Shop is running a competition to win 1000 Bertie Beetles.

The special edition of 7 NEWS, live from the EKKA, will air this Thursday from 6pm on Channel 7 and 7plus.
