A man has died after suffering critical injuries in a serious crash on the Capricorn Highway in Central Queensland on Wednesday morning.

The Capricorn Highway has been closed between Comet and Emerald due to the head-on crash, which claimed the life of a 46-year-old Northern Territory (East Arm) man.

Police say initial investigations have revealed that just before 7am, a Toyota Hilux and a Nissan Patrol collided head-on on, about 1.5km east of Duckpond Road.

The Northern Territory man was a passenger in the Patrol and sadly died at the scene, while the driver, a 32-year-old Ripley man, was taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Toyota Hilux, a 39-year-old man from Hidden Valley, was also taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

A Queensland Police spokesman earlier confirmed the highway was closed on the western side of Comet due to the crash.

The Capricorn Highway was closed for some time as investigations continued, with traffic diversions in place currently for small vehicles only.

Heavy vehicles were urged to avoid area if possible.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.

Any witnesses or anyone with dashcam vision are urged to contact police.
