Alleged child sex offenders face Bundaberg court

It was a distressing day in court in Bundaberg when four separate alleged child sex offenders had their cases mentioned, with charges including torture, rape, choking, assault, indecent treatment and making child exploitation material.

Four men accused of abusing children in their care had their cases mentioned in Bundaberg Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

The following details can be revealed, however, the men cannot be identified for legal reasons.

One man has been accused of 14 counts of indecent treatment of a child in his care under 12 and two counts of rape.

His case is set to move forward at a later date in 2023.

He did not appear in court.

Another Bundaberg man who had his case mentioned is accused of a string of offences against a child, including torture and rape.

He faces one count of torture, one count of common assault, two counts of assaults occasioning bodily harm whilst armed in company, one count of rape, one count of choking, five counts of carnal knowledge of a child under 16 (and attempts), one count of assault occasioning bodily harm (domestic violence offence), one count of breaching bail and another of receiving tainted property.

He further stands charged with one count each of possessing a knife in a public place, the unlawful possession of a Category A, B or M weapon, wearing or carrying a prohibited item in public and possessing dangerous drugs.

He did not appear in court and was remanded in custody.

A third Bundaberg man appeared before the court charged with one count of indecent treatment of a child under 16, two counts of rape and two counts of breaching bail.

Magistrate John Innes said the case had to go to the district court and would be set for a committal hearing.

The court heard the man was in the process of seeking legal representation.

His case was adjourned for mention in March 2023, and his bail was enlarged.

A fourth man, accused of the indecent treatment of a child under 16 and one count each of making child exploitation material, possessing child exploitation material and rape will go before the courts again in March.

The man, who is on bail, is alleged to have offended against a child in his care.
