Agricultural land and residential homes are on council’s chopping block, as they risk being sold to recoup overdue rates and other costs.
The list of properties was presented at a confidential council meeting on Tuesday, before being made publicly available in council meeting documents.
Councillors voted unanimously that sale action commence for the recovery of outstanding rates against the registered owners of the properties for which rates have remained unpaid for three years or more.
Power for all further steps in regards to the sales were delegated to Chief Executive Officer Steve Johnston.
As part of the next steps, council will send overdue rates notices to the property owners with a notice of intention to sell.
Property owners then have about three months to pay the costs and if not paid, council then has the right to sell within six months after the date of the notice.
If put up for sale, the land is to be sold at market or land value or higher than the overdue rates or charges.
Council may sell the land if the rates or charges have been overdue for at least three years, or one year for vacant or commercial property.
