As borders get ready to open and Bundaberg eagerly awaits the return of interstate tourists, a new project has been announced to attract locals and visitors to use public transport.
Works on upgrades to Takalvan St near Sugarland Plaza will begin in April and will see new traffic lights installed near the car park entrance on the major thoroughfare.
As well as the traffic lights, new bus shelters will be installed allowing residents and visitors to be dropped at the front of the centre. These will replace those at the rear of the car park.
Local bus company Stewart and Sons Coaches, who have been running in Bundaberg for more than 70 years, and the new bus shelters would mean continuity for their drivers and a safer drop-off for their passengers.
“It will save on so much time, as you go around the back of Sugarland there’s cars that prevent drivers from moving and sometimes accidents along the way,” said Stewart and Sons Coaches General Manager Julie Stewart.
“It’s great the borders are going to back open soon, so there’ll be tourists coming into town, they can see the bus shelter on Takalvan St and it’ll make it easier for people knowing they can get a bus.”
Mrs Stewart said bus routes would change slightly once the new facility was up and running.
She said while new facilities such as the new bus shelter could take years to come to fruition, local bus companies were excited when projects began happening.
“Sometimes things take years to come to fruition but when it comes we get excited, we promote it,” she said.
Bundaberg MP Tom Smith said he’d had many constituents speak to him about the safety concerns surrounding the intersection, which currently isn’t controlled by traffic lights.
“We know Takalvan St is one of the busiest roads in Bundaberg, it links up with the Isis Highway and Bourbong St into the CBD,” he said.
“People in the public have been talking to me about this for a while.”
Construction on the new lights and bus facility is expected to begin in April 2022.
Property owners and businesses near the new bus facility will be notified of the work before they begin.
