Thor takes over Brisbane

IT may be hungry work playing the role of a superhero, but Hollywood hunk Chris Hemsworth can rest assured Brisbane restaurants will keep him well fed this week.

Streets across the CBD have been closed to traffic as filming for Thor: Ragnarok got underway on Sunday.

While some businesses are worried about the impact the lack of cars will have on trade, most are excited about the prospect of meeting a Hollywood star or two.

Ozz Turquoise Kebab and Pizza owner Bulent Kocak couldn’t contain his excitement about Thor: Ragnarok being filmed across the road from his business.

“More action means more people coming here,” he said.

But mostly Mr Kocak just wants to come face-to-face with Thor’s leading man.

“I want to see him and sell a kebab to him,” he said, laughing.

“For him it will be free, then the second one I will charge him double.”

Raw Energy trainee Nikki Bui said she loved everything about Hemsworth and his brother Liam.

Owner Elen Gueorguiev admitted he didn’t know the Aussie star by name, but would recognise his face.

Mr Gueorguiev said he was confident Hemsworth would enjoy Raw Energy’s food options, which include acai bowls and a caveman chicken salad.

“It will probably be some of the best food he has ever eaten,” he said.

Toby’s Estate employee Hayden Austin was also one of the few people to not know about Hemsworth, that is until his girlfriend pointed him out.

Mr Austin said he was now excited to have the chance to meet him.

“He’s more than welcome to come in if he wants a good coffee,” he said.

“Maybe we can turn him into a temporary regular.”

Mr Edwards restaurant owner Zoe Whiffen said several customers had made bookings for Monday night in the hope of “getting a glimpse of Chris Hemsworth”.

“They’ve specifically said they heard he was going to be here,” she said.

“It’s exciting.”

But it is not just Brisbane restaurants getting into the Hollywood spirit.

City Mitre 10 on Elizabeth St took to social media late last week to spread the word the shelves had been stocked with hammers in case the Marvel character needed a replacement.

Assistant manager Mark Lawrance said there were plenty on offer, even a small one for a “junior Thor”.

Chocolate Moments on Albert St doesn’t stock hammers.

It does sell edible chocolate guns, but one of its staff members — who didn’t want to be named — conceded they were “probably not as big as Thor’s guns”.

BEST VANTAGE POINTS

For those wanting to watch Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston and Sir Anthony Hopkins in action, the best vantage points are on the footpath or inside Brisbane hotels.

The Sebel, Mantra, Four Points Sheraton, Quest and iStay all have rooms overlooking parts of the CBD where filming will take place.

Most still have some availability this week.

Four Points by Sheraton Sales and Marketing director Janine Watton said news of Thor: Ragnarok being filmed in Brisbane had brought a buzz to the city.

“Mostly people are excited they might get a look at something,” she said.

Ms Watton said the hotel was informed about the road closures in May.

“The production company have been extremely helpful,” she said.

“They don’t want to upset our business or our reputation.”
