Triple M has confirmed Brisbane radio hosts Leisel Jones and Liam Flanagan will join AFL great Peter ‘Spida’ Everitt on a revamped 92.5 Triple M Gold breakfast show by January 13.

The new Gold Coast line-up comes after the shock departure of Mr Everitt’s co-host Ali Plath last month – days after parent company Southern Cross Austereo (SCA) announced the extended syndication of The Marty Sheargold Show would replace Ms Jones, Mr Flanagan and Ben ‘Dobbo’ Dobbin’s Brisbane drive radio show, The Rush Hour.

Ms Jones and Mr Flanagan who were still under contract at the time of The Rush Hour being axed, said in an exclusive interview on Thursday it was “pretty late” when told about the restructure.

“The reality is SCA is a huge organisation - there’s so much going on that we don’t know about and we’re not privy to,” Mr Flanagan said.

We got told when it was our time to be told about what was happening (in Brisbane) and then we got told about this.”

Mr Everitt said the news “probably wasn’t handled the best” – but the former player for St Kilda, Hawthorn and Sydney Swans said it was no different to sport.

“I know everyone wants things handled a certain way and it’s no different to the sporting world,” he said.

“There’s so much speculation and it’s the same here. Just like football – at the end of the year unfortunately there’s going to be players that are lost and there’s going to be new players to make this team better. I always totally believe just like a footy club if the directors and all that are no good the team’s going to be no good.”

Mr Everitt said over the past 12 months Triple M Gold had been “building well” from the top down.

“This is that result now that hopefully brings us the grand final,” he said.

Olympic sporting legend Ms Jones echoed the sentiment.

“We know it’s cut throat, we know everything’s brutal and we thrive on feedback,” she said.

“So that’s the most important thing transitioning out of sport – this feels like a sporting team too in that you hang s**t on people, you have fun, enjoy life and it reflects in your work as well sharing those sporting backgrounds.

“We’re not curing cancer, we’re just entertainment and you’ve got to enjoy it while you’re here because it is such a privilege to be in this position.”

The trio said they were thrilled to wake up the Gold Coast with their new 92.5 Triple M Gold Breakfast with Leisel Jones, Liam and Spida.

“I can’t wait to get my hands in there,” Ms Jones said.

“I spent a lot of my teenage years on the Gold Coast and have wanted to be here for so long, back in the salt water getting sunshine and maybe even going back to blonde.”

As for Mr Flanagan – the radio host revealed he’s been battling the M1 for the Brisbane drive show for years.

“It’s a little secret – I’ve been driving that M1 every day to get up to Brisbane,” he said.

“This is my home so to now get to do radio for what is my home, I’m beyond excited my wife is from here and I married into this city.”
