A bush turkey has sadly died after being struck by an arrow in a sickening attack on the Gold Coast.
On Tuesday, the Currumbin Wildlife Hospital shared X-ray photos of the Australian bush turkey after it had been shot by an archery arrow.
The bush turkey was found alive in Mudgeeraba before it was rushed back to Currumbin to undergo surgery.
“This Australian bush turkey was found alive in Mudgeeraba with an archery arrow through his body,” a Currumbin Wildlife Hospital statement said.
“Our dedicated vets and vet nurses tried everything to save him.
“Sadly, his injuries were too severe, and he didn’t survive.
“Every animal, no matter the species, deserves kindness and care.
“Australian bush turkeys are fully protected in Queensland and management of their natural habitat and respect for the species is important for them to survive.”
The news shocked residents, even Gold Coast influencer Karina Irby saying it was “heartbreaking”.
Australian veterinarian Katrina Warren commented on the post and said she was “appalled”.
“What is wrong with people,” she said.
“I’ll never understand cruelty like this.
“I’m sorry for your staff having to witness horrible things like this.
“Thank you to the team for trying hard to save it.”
It comes less than four months after a pet peacock was impaled by an arrow in a “sick and disgusting” incident at The Panorama area of Tallai.
The peacock was transported for immediate veterinary treatment but sadly died due to its injuries.
A month earlier, a wallaby was found with an arrow lodged in its chest in the same suburb.
