New details on what led to a frantic spotlight search of the Mary River this week can be revealed.
It comes after police, paramedics, firefighters and SES crews swarmed the area near the Lamington Bridge on Tuesday night, searching for a 26-year-old man who was eventually found the following morning.
While it had already been speculated that the man had gone missing while fleeing police, it was confirmed on Friday that this had been the case.
“Police approached the 26-year-old man after reports he may have been involved in a disturbance at a venue on Gympie Road, Tinana on August 13,” a police spokesperson confirmed.
“The man ran from police and a search and rescue operation was initially launched following concerns the man may have entered the river, however he was eventually located on the Lamington Bridge around 7am on August 14.”
No charges have been laid.
Photos and video taken on the night showed multiple crews scanning the water near the boat ramp until nearly midnight despite heavy rain.
Dressed in raincoats and high visibility gear, dozens of emergency crews could be seen out on the water and moving about the pontoon and boat ramp area in the rain but by 11pm the search had been called off for the night.
The search resumed at first light on Wednesday but just before 8am police reported the man had been found safe and well.
