Your Mates Brewing Co delivers Aussie movie vibes

There may be no pool table in sight, but this brewpub will have diners feeling like they’re inside the great Aussie movie.

Fake fish are displayed like trophies mounted to VJ walls; surf videos play on TV screens surrounded by artworks of giant waves, while string lights and artificial vines wrap exposed rafters.

It’s the kind of Australiana paraphernalia ripped straight from the pool room of the movie The Castle, and it’s right at home at holiday hot spot Your Mates Brewing in Warana.

The hugely popular Sunshine Coast beer hub embodies all the warmth, charm and humility of the classic film, with staff as friendly as the characters, happy to have a chat and recommend a drink or two to suit your tastes from their ever changing line-up of frothies on tap behind the bar.

Diners order food at the bar too, from a quintessential brewpub menu moving from snacks such as spiced pork crackle and beer-battered pickles to favourites like a chicken schnitty and burgers filled with everything from brisket and fried chicken to mushrooms and vegan patties. And for the “little mates” (aka the kids), four options include your standard chicken nuggets and chips, plus the healthy picnic plate featuring carrot, cucumber, strawberries, grapes, cheese and a warm milk bun.

Their parmy ($27) is their signature and it’s a good one: a generous chunk of chicken, crumbed and topped with smoky bacon, a bitey napoletana sauce and so much cheese it oozes off the sides, frying against the hot plate to form a brown crispy crust that’s worth fighting over.

Meanwhile, the barbecued smoked brisket ($25) is butter soft and sweet from the sauce, served alongside corn cut off the cob like a pork rib and charred, and a runny mac ‘n’ cheese, which would benefit from some additional seasoning.

With all that richness, you’ll want a beer to refresh the palate and if they have a sour on tap, try it, as it’s a style they do well. Also easy-drinking is German-style berliner weisse, or for those who aren’t afraid to go bold, try Sally IPA.

There is also a handful of cocktails and some locally made wine for non-beer drinkers, plus soft drink and juices for the kids.

Giving the place the final family friendly tick of approval is an undercover play area with a cubby house for children.

But it’s really adults who will have the most fun at Your Mates. From the boardies and thongs-wearing 60-plus year olds to the mullet-clad 20-somethings; it’s a place that encapsulates all things great about an Aussie summer, all year long.
