Brisbane’s best healthy kids’ menu cafes

From yoghurt parfaits to vegetable soldiers, here are Brisbane’s best eateries serving healthy children’s meals they’ll actually want to eat.

Foods parents are buying for their children 'not as healthy as they think'

Forget cheeseburgers, chips and nuggets - more and more cafes are rolling out healthy meals for kids as they try to reduce childhood obesity rates.

From yoghurt parfaits to vegetable soldiers, nutritious options are being introduced to menus across Queensland to make dining out with little ones easier.

Sherridan Cluff, nutritionist at Health and Wellbeing Queensland, said cafes and restaurants proved the perfect playground for kids to try different foods.

“Eating out is a great opportunity for children to experiment with different tastes and textures, learn about new foods, and consume a wholesome meal that is going to help them to thrive,” she said.

“In some cafes and restaurants, the adults’ menu has more variety and a greater number of healthier options. If nothing stands out on a kids’ menu, order off the adults’ menu and ask the venue to make the meal in a smaller size.”

For breakfast out with children, she recommended the likes of avocado on toast, vegetable omelettes or frittatas and yoghurt and muesli bowls; while for lunch and dinner, consider salad wraps and burgers, pastas with tomato based sauce, or grilled tacos. But most importantly, go easy on the chips.

“Chips are a crowd favourite but they’re extremely high in kilojoules and saturated fat – most fried versions are around 30 to 40 per cent fat,” she said.

“Instead of chips, go for options like mashed or baked (jacket) potatoes, sweet potato or pumpkin (or) consider other sources of grains such as pasta, rice, couscous, or wholemeal and wholegrain bread or rolls.”
