Lloyd’s General Store has opened on the corner of Brunswick St and Gregory Tce in Fortitude Valley and serves the choice of just one dish to its patrons on a first come, first served basis.
“With the dinner menu the whole idea is to advertise on the website or on social media that I’ll be doing, say, risotto and there’ll be eight portions so come and get it,” said Liz Lloyd who started the business with husband James.
“The space is only 40sq m so you’re preparing everything alongside the customers so it’s like coming home and being in the kitchen while your mum is cooking.”
While the one dish could be as simple as a lasagne or bowl of pasta, Mrs Lloyd said the ingredients would be mostly organic, with the majority to come from her parents’ farm in Ipswich.
“We want to take that farm-to-plate idea and offer people an organic approach where they know where their food is coming from,” she said.
Luckily for hungry diners, the restaurant and bar also doubles as a deli, with charcuterie, cheese and olive boards also available, as well as the likes of pre-packaged terrines and pate from top-notch suppliers such as City Larder and Maggie Beer.
“The whole idea is that anything you eat in store you can buy,” Mrs Lloyd said, with everything from lentils and tinned sardines to oil and vinegar also on the shelves.
Salads will be available too, as well as croissants and coffee from All Press, while the plan is to expand the offering to include more vegan options by day and a dessert at night.
The venue is licensed with a tight selection of organic and biodynamic wine from Australia and France, in addition to local craft beer from breweries including Brouhaha and Black Hops.
