Sunrise host Natalie Barr shared some personal news on-air this morning, revealing she’s currently undergoing treatment for skin cancer.

“I had a pimple on my nose that wouldn’t go away, plus I reckon it had been couple of years since I had a skin check, so I went the dermatologist,” Barr told viewers, in a segment that showed her attending a clinic to seek treatment.

“He said it was skin cancer — this tiny little dot on my nose. The good thing is I got it really early, and there’s not much treatment,” she said.

“After a biopsy was taken, it did confirm that I had a small skin cancer. The good news, it could be treated non-surgically.”

Barr assured viewers that she is fine and that the cancer will be successfully removed following another round of treatment later this week.

Sunrise co-host Matt Shirvington asked Barr “how nervous” she was when she was told the spot was in fact skin cancer.

“You sort of go ‘Oh my god’. So many Aussies, millions, and millions of us have skin cancer, but it does make you think.” Barr responded.

Barr said she was sharing her story to encourage others to get regular skin check-ups – and it had an immediate effect on one person close to her.

Shirvington noted that, while the segment was playing, fellow Sunrise presenter Edwina Bartholomew had hopped on her phone to book herself in for an appointment.

Barr is one of several Aussie celebs to use their own experiences to raise awareness of skin cancer in recent years.

In March, Hamish Blake revealed he had a skin cancer cut out from his forehead, leaving him with five stitches above his right eye

“This is my reminder to anyone who needs it (i.e. everyone) to get your skin checked every six months,” he wrote on social media, sharing a photo of the fresh scar.

The previous year, Aussie actor Hugh Jackman gave fans an update on his skin cancer scare after undergoing two procedures on his face – one in 2021 and the other one year later.

And in 2021, popular radio presenter Deb Knight told listeners she’d been diagnosed with skin cancer.

“It is not the best news,” she said, explaining that a biopsy on her nose had revealed a “small cancer” which would have to be removed.
