LAWRENCE “The Moonman” Mooney looks set to replace Matty Johns on Triple M’s The Grill Team in Sydney after announcing his departure from the station’s Brisbane breakfast show.
The comedian, who joined co-hosts Robin Bailey and Greg “Marto” Martin on The Big Breakfast, at the start of the year following the departure of Ed Kavalee, will be replaced by fellow funny man Nick Cody.
Triple M Brisbane’s sporting all-rounder Ben “Dobbo” Dobbin will present breaking sports news throughout the show.
The changes were announced on air during the team’s last show of the year on Friday, with Mooney confirming he would still make guest appearances in the form of his characters including the former Prime Minister of Australia, Malcolm Turnbull and Rusty Crowe but declined to comment on his next move.
“I can’t say too much,” he told Confidential.
“I will be really sad to leave because it’s an awesome team and Brisbane has really wrapped me in their arms so I will really miss being up here.”
Cody, who made his US television debut last year on Conan O’Brien’s late night talk show – only the fourth Australian to do so – and has performed his stand up on US network Comedy Central, said joining The Big Breakfast in Brisbane was “a dream job”.
“I’m just pumped for the opportunity,” he said.
“They’re massive shoes to fill - he (Mooney) is a big inspiration to me, I’ve toured with him a bunch.
“Robin and Marto are both great people.”
Mooney said it felt good to go out on a high note, with the show coming in at No. 1 in Brisbane breakfast radio in the last ratings survey
“It’s nice to leave at number one - to do the job, win a premiership and out you go,” he said.
“But the man stepping into my shoes is very capable. I really do rate Nick.”
On Friday, Matty Johns gave an emotional on-air farewell to The Grill Team, having been with the show since 2011.
He previously told The Australian he assumed Mooney would replace him.
