The bistro in the Imperial recently had a makeover that turned it into Gecko Red restaurant. Another fab addition for parents is an amazing kids' room adjoining the diner with enough blackboards, video games and toys to ensure parents get a relatively uninterrupted meal. The food hasn't changed much with the usual pub suspects present, but a chicken schnitzel with Gecko sauce (a creamy garlic concoction) is a plate-cleaner, while the crumbed lamb cutlets looked like they'd had a run-in with one of the passing semis. Overall, though, with its broody front bar full of vintage racing pics and caricatures, the Imperial is worth stopping for.
