Blue Chook
No, we hadn't heard of Espresso Botero, either - apologies to Danny Young's Maclean-based roastery in the Clarence Valley. His beans are done proud in a caffe latte ($3.50) at the Blue Chook, encased in a red-brick, library-like building at the end of a pram-friendly ramp. Co-owner and caterer Anthony Perring stirs pots in the open kitchen, coming up with fun things like bite-sized egg tarts for breakfast, or sticky toffee pud in a jar to take home. The lovely smell of slow-braised meatballs wafts through the open windows to the few streetside tables easy to know what to order for lunch, then.
