The Abyssinian
African$$
A great place in Melbourne for a tour of the cuisines of Africa's north-east, the Abyssinian is a complete experience. The small dining room is chock-full of African-themed artworks and punters sipping regional beers. The 'chef's combination', designed to share, is a great option and comes to the table in a huge platter with small samples of meat and vegetable dishes piled atop pancake-like injera bread. Chicken in a turmeric sauce is succulent and mildly spiced, while cinnamon-tinged goat with lemon and cloves falls off the bone. The cubed pumpkin cooked in berbere paste is a standout.
