White House enlists Birmingham in search of new WTO boss

Washington/London | The Trump administration is urging Australia to help find a compelling candidate to take charge of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) to drive reform of the beleaguered rule-setting body.

Australia's ambassador to Washington, Arthur Sinodinos, told AFR Weekend that US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer had recently spoken to Trade Minister Simon Birmingham about "finding a good candidate for the WTO director-general position", replacing Brazilian trade diplomat Roberto Azevedo who resigned unexpectedly last month.
