That's all for tonight

Thank you for reading with us. We've started the new blog for Thursday 5 November now - please head over to the US Votes 2020 election blog here.

What happened tonight?

Joe Biden stands at 238 electoral votes and Donald Trump at 213.

A winner is yet to be determined with six key battleground states still counting hundreds of thousands of ballots each - Biden and Trump are running neck and neck in these states.

Despite the fact that counting is still ongoing, Trump has falsely declared himself the winner and demanded that states should stop counting votes. He has also made baseless claims of "fraud" and threatened legal challenges to the vote.

The Democrats' hoped-for "blue wave" has failed to materialise - the Republicans are on track to retain control of the Senate and the Democrats look to retain Congress without making any gains.
