Immigration could save the US from recession. But there’s a catch

The US immigration crisis is fuelling economic growth, according to experts. Others say it can burden cities with huge costs and drive down productivity and wages.

Washington | Cheap labour from America’s record influx of illegal immigrants will help the country avoid a recession this year, by adding $US7 trillion ($11 trillion) to the economy over the next decade, according to Congress’ independent budgeting office.

However, experts are questioning the economic and societal benefits of more than 9 million illegal immigrants entering America since President Joe Biden took office and reversed Trump’s hardline immigration policies.
