‘Leaving in droves’: LA lost its lustre long ago, just ask Musk

The fires and the failure to manage them mean more Californians are heading for the exits, according to demographers. It might also spell trouble for the Olympics just three years away.

It’s known as the Golden State, but disaster-prone California was losing its lustre well before the devastating fires that have claimed at least 24 lives and caused incalculable damage in large parts of Los Angeles.

Long the target of conservative politicians and commentators critical of its “woke” politics, Hollywood liberalism and the decay of San Francisco, the relatively high costs of living there, crime rate and perceptions of poor service delivery have been driving people away for years.
