American presidential inaugurations traditionally nurture a sense of unity, pride and aspiration – drawing on that American quality of oratory John Kennedy and Barack Obama come to mind – which causes emotions to soar.

Not so in 2017. The speech by then-incoming president Trump provoked former president George W. Bush to remark: “That was some weird shit.”
