Why Israel’s attack could push Iran to build a bomb

This conflict will solve nothing, and absent the collapse of the Iranian regime, it is quite possible that an even more consequential security threat, a nuclear-capable Iran, may emerge in the future.

While Israel’s bombing campaign against Iran is in its early days, exactly what it will achieve in the medium to long term is anybody’s guess.

But it should not be seen as the start of a conflict between the two countries, rather it is a high point in a campaign undertaken by Israel following the Hamas terrorist attacks on October 7, 2023. Then, Israel made the strategic decision to degrade the military capability of Iran’s regional non-state allies, particularly Lebanon-based Hezbollah. Now, it is going for Iran itself.
