Israel has targeted Iran’s nuclear weapons program and killed the country’s three top military commanders in a wave of airstrikes, heightening fears the Middle East is on the brink of a full-scale war between the region’s bitter enemies.
Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Israel would face “severe punishment” over the attacks, while US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stressed the White House was not involved and warned Tehran against reprisals targeting US personnel or interests.
An earlier version of this story omitted the word “program” in the first paragraph. The story has been updated.
