When an estimated 6000 terrorists from Hamas and other Palestinian militant groups crossed the border from Gaza into Israel on October 7 last year, the goal according to a senior member of its Politburo was to “change the equation”.

“We had to tell people that the Palestinian cause would not die,” Khalil al-Hayya told The New York Times a month after the attack.
