Why now is not the time for Palestinian statehood

If the resolution to admit Palestine as a full member would help to deliver a lasting peace, Australia should vote ‘yes’. But the reality is it would entrench Hamas’ control of Gaza.

A resolution will be presented to the UN General Assembly in New York on Friday (Saturday AEST) to propose that Palestine be admitted as a full member of the United Nations.

Australia must keep its eyes firmly on the prize of an authentic, durable two-state solution – a democratic, peaceful Palestinian state emerging and thriving alongside a secure Israel.
