In 2017, Pope Francis met President Donald Trump for the first and only time, and defused months of tension with the mention of a Slovenian pastry.

During that meeting, which included some of Trump’s family, the pope shook the hand of first lady Melania Trump. Then he smiled and gestured over to her husband.
