Strong earthquake hits Taiwan, chip plants evacuated
Taipei | Taiwan has been hit by its strongest earthquake in 25 years, with shocks levelling dozens of buildings on the eastern side of the island, killing four people, injuring more than 700 others and disrupting some chip production lines.
The quake – measuring 7.4 in magnitude, according to the US Geological Survey – struck the eastern city of Hualien, although shocks were felt as far away as Japan and China. Some 26 buildings collapsed, according to Taiwan’s Central Emergency Operation Centre.
