Strangest Olympics takes Tokyo’s joy behind closed doors
Japanese people, like Australians, love sport. Yes this Olympics will be ‘like no other’, but the joy will still be there when a Japanese athlete does well and gets a medal.
Melanie BrockContributorOh Japan. My heart breaks for my adopted homeland. How different this all should have been. Tokyo 2020 was meant to be Japan’s moment in the sun. Damn pandemic. If only we could have delayed the Games until 2022. And the real reason that didn’t happen will probably never be known. So, for now, let’s get back to Tokyo 2020 in 2021.
People ask me what the atmosphere is like and whether Japanese are excited about the Olympics. When I report that the mood is muted, some like to remind me that is to be expected. They are quick to explain to me that people who live in Olympic host cities are always hesitant in the lead-up to the Games. Mostly due to traffic inconveniences and other restrictions. They assure me that once the opening ceremony comes around things settle and residents forget their grievances.
